Why Every Prayer App Gives You a Different Time

Fajr moves 23 minutes, Asr moves 56, and Isha in London can shift two hours. One setting almost nobody opens explains all of it.
The setting almost nobody opens
Two people in the same city, both looking at a prayer app, and Fajr is twenty minutes apart. Neither app is broken and neither person is doing anything wrong. Somewhere in the settings of each app there is a menu called calculation method, and it was set by whoever wrote the app rather than by the mosque down the road.
That menu is not a cosmetic preference. It is the single input that decides three of your five prayers. Once you know what it does, the disagreement stops being mysterious and becomes something you can settle in about ten seconds.
Three prayers are observed, two are inferred
Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are anchored to things you can point at: the sun crossing its highest point, a shadow reaching a certain length, the disc dropping below the horizon. Fajr and Isha are not. They are defined by twilight — the moment the first whiteness appears before dawn, and the moment the last red glow disappears after sunset. Nobody can put a clock on a glow.
So astronomers translated the glow into geometry. Twilight is expressed as how far the sun has sunk below the horizon, measured in degrees. Fajr begins when the sun is a given number of degrees below the horizon on the way up; Isha begins at a given number of degrees on the way down. Every calculation method is, at bottom, a pair of chosen angles.
The angles in wide use run from 15 to 20 degrees. Fifteen is ISNA, adopted for North America because the deeper angles push Fajr absurdly early in a Chicago or Toronto summer. Eighteen is the Muslim World League, the closest thing to a global default. Nineteen and a half is the Egyptian General Authority of Survey, from twilight observations in the Nile Delta. Karachi uses 18 for both ends; Singapore uses 20 for Fajr.
What the angle costs you in Ramadan
Abstract degrees, concrete consequences. Take Cairo on 20 February 2027, inside Ramadan, and ask five common methods when Fajr begins — which is to say, when suhoor ends.
Twenty-three minutes at the start of the fast, and it works the same way in reverse at the other end of the day: Isha in Cairo that evening runs from 18:53 under ISNA to 19:17 under Umm al-Qura. Maghrib, meanwhile, is 17:47 in every single method, because Maghrib is a sunset you can watch rather than a glow somebody had to model.
Asr is a completely separate argument — and a bigger one
Changing the calculation method does nothing to Asr, which trips people up constantly. Asr is not a twilight angle; it is a shadow, and the schools of law differ on how long the shadow has to get.
The Maliki, Shafi and Hanbali position is that Asr begins when an object's shadow has grown by the object's own height. The Hanafi position is that it begins when the shadow has grown by twice that height. This is a difference in fiqh, not in astronomy, and it moves the clock further than any angle dispute does.
Fifty-six minutes is more than double the entire Fajr spread. If your app agrees with the mosque on Fajr and Isha but is an hour off on Asr, you are not looking at a calculation-method problem at all; you are looking at a madhhab toggle sitting somewhere else in the settings.
Makkah does not use an angle for Isha
Umm al-Qura, the standard used across Saudi Arabia, sets Fajr at 18.5 degrees but abandons angles entirely for Isha. Isha is simply ninety minutes after Maghrib, all year, every day — extended to a hundred and twenty minutes during Ramadan.
At Makkah's latitude a fixed interval and a twilight angle land in roughly the same place, so the simplification costs almost nothing where it was designed to be used. Carry it far from the tropics and it drifts: in Cairo it produces the latest Isha of any common method, and by the time you reach northern Europe it can sit half an hour away from every angle-based neighbour. It is also, for exactly that reason, the one method that never fails outright — which brings us to the interesting failure.
Above roughly 48 degrees north, the angle has no answer
In midsummer at high latitude the sun never sinks 18 degrees below the horizon. Twilight never ends. The equation that produces Fajr and Isha has no solution, and this is not an edge case — it covers London, Berlin, Moscow, Toronto, most of the UK and northern Europe for weeks at a stretch.
Calculators cannot return nothing, so they substitute a rule of thumb. Three are in common use: split the night in half and call the midpoint both Isha and Fajr; give Isha the first seventh of the night and Fajr the last seventh; or scale the night by the ratio of the twilight angle to sixty. On 21 June in London, with the World League's 18 degrees, those three rules give Fajr at 01:02, 03:40 and 02:31 respectively.
That is a spread of two hours and thirty-eight minutes from a single method, purely on the basis of a fallback nobody chose deliberately. The calculator on this site uses the middle-of-the-night rule. Umm al-Qura, being interval-based, sails through and puts Isha at 22:52. If you live at that latitude, no calculator is authoritative — your local mosque or Islamic council has almost certainly issued a ruling for exactly these weeks, and that ruling beats any app.
So which time do you follow?
Follow your local mosque or national authority, and use the method that reproduces its timetable. Every country has a default: Egypt and much of North Africa use the Egyptian Authority, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf use Umm al-Qura, Turkey uses Diyanet, Pakistan and India use Karachi, Indonesia and Malaysia use Singapore's angles, and North American mosques split between ISNA and the Moonsighting Committee.
The practical test takes one minute. Open your mosque's printed timetable, open the app, and switch methods until Fajr matches to within a minute or two. If Fajr lines up but Asr is an hour out, flip the madhhab. Then leave it alone — consistency matters more than the last minute of precision, and re-picking a method every month is how people end up praying to three different schedules in the same year.
