Prayer times come from the sun's altitude. Fajr and Isha shift by several minutes depending on the reference angle a region uses — commonly between 15° and 19° — and Asr depends on the shadow-length rule of your madhab. Match those two settings first when comparing with a local timetable.

The five times are defined by the sun

Fajr is the dawn prayer. Its time runs from astronomical twilight, when the sky first begins to lighten, until sunrise.

Dhuhr, the midday prayer, enters just after the sun passes its zenith.

Asr is the afternoon prayer. It begins when an object's shadow reaches a defined multiple of its length.

Maghrib follows immediately after sunset.

Isha, the night prayer, begins once the evening twilight has disappeared.

All five are therefore functions of latitude, longitude and date. Even in one city they shift by minutes every day through the year.

Why there are several calculation methods

Fajr and Isha are defined by how far the sun sits below the horizon, and different bodies settled on different angles.

MWL (Muslim World League) uses Fajr 18°, Isha 17°, and is the most widely used.

ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) uses 15°/15°, set lower to keep times workable at North American latitudes.

Umm al-Qura sets Fajr at 18.5° and fixes Isha at 90 minutes after Maghrib (120 in Ramadan) rather than an angle. It is the Saudi standard.

The Egyptian General Authority uses 19.5°/17.5°.

The differences are practical: Fajr can vary by more than twenty minutes between methods in the same city. Use whichever your community or local mosque follows.

Asr depends on your school

Asr is defined by shadow length, measured from the minimum shadow an object casts at midday.

Standard (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali) — factor 1, when the shadow equals the object's length.

Hanafi — factor 2, when it reaches twice the length, which falls 30 to 60 minutes later depending on season.

Both are valid positions. Select the one you follow.

High latitudes break the calculation

Above roughly 48° latitude, the sun in summer never descends to the required angle. Twilight persists all night and Fajr and Isha cease to exist as calculated times.

This is a real problem across northern Europe, northern Canada and Russia, and several conventions address it:

Middle of the Night splits the interval between Maghrib and Fajr in half.

One-Seventh of the Night divides the night into sevenths and allocates from there.

The angle-based convention borrows the pattern from a lower latitude.

This is a limitation of the calculation rather than an error. Follow the guidance of Islamic authorities in your region.

Setting your location

Use device GPS with permission, or search for a city.

Precision requirements are modest. One degree of longitude (about 80km) shifts times by roughly four minutes, so a few kilometres within a city changes nothing meaningful.

Latitude has more seasonal effect. Reset your location after travelling any significant distance north or south.

Everything is computed in the browser. Your location is not transmitted, and a page already loaded keeps working without a connection.

How much to rely on these times

The astronomical computation itself is precise. But it can differ by minutes from your local mosque's published schedule.

Mosques may use a different calculation method, add a precautionary margin, or round to local convention.

For something that should not be wrong, use this as a reference and treat your mosque's timetable as authoritative.

What this tool is
Calculated times from the sun's position. It is not a ruling and not your mosque's timetable — where the two differ, follow your local authority.
Formula
Solar position is computed for your latitude, longitude and date, entirely in the browser. Dhuhr follows solar noon, Maghrib follows sunset, and Fajr and Isha are set by the twilight angle of the method you choose (MWL, ISNA, Umm al-Qura and others). Asr follows the shadow-length rule of your madhab: the Shafi rule adds one object length to the noon shadow, the Hanafi rule adds two.
Worked example
For a 1-metre pole casting a 0.5-metre shadow at noon, Asr under the Shafi rule begins when the shadow reaches 1.5 metres, and under the Hanafi rule when it reaches 2.5 metres — later in the afternoon.
Limitations
  • Method and madhab change the answer. Fajr and Isha angles in common use range from about 15° to 19°, and Asr differs between Shafi and Hanafi. Match both settings before comparing with a printed timetable.
  • High latitudes break the calculation. Where twilight never ends in summer, no angle-based Fajr or Isha exists, and communities apply substitute rules that this page does not choose for you.
  • It uses a mathematical horizon. Local elevation, mountains and tall buildings shift the actual sunrise and sunset by minutes.
  • Position comes from your device or a city search. A coarse network location can be off by kilometres, and a city-level match uses that city's centre, not where you are.
  • There is no local convention layer. Many mosques add a few minutes to Fajr or Isha as a precaution, which no computation reproduces.
