Mental Rotation Test

Twenty items asking whether the right-hand shape is the left one rotated, or the left one mirrored and then rotated. Every shape is generated in code, fresh each run.

How to use

  1. Look at the two shapes side by side. The right one is the left rotated, or mirrored and then rotated.
  2. Pick Same if rotation alone matches them, Mirrored if it needs a flip.
  3. After 20 items you get your score and mean decision time.

Symmetric shapes are rejected before they become items: their mirror image is also a rotation, so both answers would be correct at once.

The candidate always gets 90, 180 or 270 degrees, which removes items you could match by eye without rotating anything.

FAQ

What do I score by guessing?

It is a two-choice task, so guessing lands near 10 out of 20. The grade bands are set with that in mind.

Is this the classic mental rotation test?

The task structure is from the same family, but the stimuli are not. Nothing from the published figures is used — the grid shapes are generated in code.

Is there a time limit?

No, though the mean decision time on correct items is reported alongside your score.
